Accreditations and Designations

The WVU Cancer Institute Radiation Oncology Department has been awarded accreditation by the American College of Radiology (ACR), the nation’s oldest and most widely accepted radiation oncology accrediting body. It is awarded only to facilities meeting specific guidelines and standards developed by ACR after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified radiation oncologists and medical physicists who are experts in the field.

The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology’s (ASTRO’s) APEx – Accreditation Program for Excellence was developed by radiation oncology professionals to recognize facilities that deliver safe, high-quality care to their patients. The Radiation Oncology programs at the WVU Cancer Institute’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center and WVU Medicine Fairmont Medical Center have attained reaccreditation from this group. Radiation Oncology practices accredited by APEx have the systems, personnel, policies, and procedures in place to demonstrate dedication to high-quality patient care, a respect for protecting the rights of patients, and being responsive to patient needs and concerns.

The WVU Cancer Institute’s Betty Puskar Breast Care Center has been named an ACR Designated Comprehensive Breast Imaging Center. This designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by earning accreditation in all voluntary American College of Radiology breast-imaging programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.

West Virginia University Hospitals has been designated as a Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR). As a research collaboration between the National Marrow Donor Program/Be The Match and the Medical College of Wisconsin, CIBMTR depends on participating centers, and the staff and faculty at those centers, to complete its important work. As a dedicated participating center, we have assisted in building patient resource data and providing donor/recipient biological samples.

The WVU Cancer Institute Cellular Therapy Program was awarded its sixth consecutive Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) reaccreditation for blood and marrow transplant and first FACT accreditation for immune effector cell therapy (CART-T). FACT accreditation demonstrates that the program has exceeded standards in patient care and laboratory services, and achieved excellence in cellular therapy.

West Virginia University Hospitals has achieved status as an ACR (American College of Radiology) Lung Cancer Screening Center. Designated by the Lung Cancer Alliance, these screening centers of excellence meet the standards of the American College of Radiology, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, and International Early Lung Cancer Action Program. The standards involve controlling screening quality, radiation dose, and diagnostic procedures within an experienced, multidisciplinary clinical setting. Designees also commit to provide clear, current information on who is a candidate for lung cancer screening.

The Comprehensive Breast Care Program at the WVU Cancer Institute has again been granted a full three-year accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. This is the breast care program’s fourth consecutive full accreditation.

WVU Medicine J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital has been designated a National Pancreatic Foundation Center by the National Pancreas Foundation for the treatment and care of patients with pancreatic cancer. As a designated center, Ruby Memorial Hospital seeks to advance research and lead the way for heightened awareness and understanding of pancreatic cancer among providers, patients, families, and the general public.

The WVU Cancer Institute Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center has received recertification by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI®) Certification Program, which recognizes high-quality care for outpatient hematology-oncology practices in the United States.
