Krista Pfaendler, MD, MPH

Medical Director of Quality, WVU Cancer Institute

Krista Pfaendler, MD, MPH, is the medical director for quality and performance improvement for the WVU Cancer Institute’s Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center. In this role, she serves as chair of the Oncology Quality Council and cancer liaison physician for the WVU Cancer Committee, working with multidisciplinary teams to improve quality and delivery of care to cancer patients.

Dr. Pfaendler is also the director of clinical research for Gynecologic Oncology through the WVU Cancer Institute Clinical Research Unit and serves as the disease team leader and principal investigator for national clinical trials through NRG Oncology and the GOG Foundation. She was awarded a GOG Foundation New Investigator Award (2022 through 2025) through the GOG Foundation Education and Mentoring Committee, in collaboration with the NRG Oncology Early Career New Investigator Committee and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.

Since 2019, Dr. Pfaendler has served as a core member on the Cervix and Vulva subcommittee for NRG Oncology. She was selected to serve as the early career investigator on the National Cancer Institute Cervical Cancer Task Force for 2023 and 2024.

Within the WVU Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Pfaendler developed the robotic surgery curriculum for resident training and established a global health track for the residency. She was selected by the residents for the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) National Faculty Teaching Award in 2021. Through the WVU Health Science Center, she was selected to receive the Women in Science and Health (WISH) Mid-Career Excellence Award in 2023.

Dr. Pfaendler, an associate professor in the WVU School of Medicine Division of Gynecologic Oncology, completed her medical education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cincinnati, and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of California, Irvine, before moving to Morgantown, West Virginia, to join faculty at West Virginia University. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in gynecologic oncology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
